About San Diego Soccer Club
How We Started
San Diego Soccer Club (SDSC) is a non-profit, 501(c) 3, youth soccer organization that operates both recreational and competitive leagues. Based in the North County Inland area of San Diego in the communities of Rancho Penasquitos, Rancho Bernardo, and 4S Ranch. San Diego Soccer Club is the consolidation of two great area soccer programs: The Penasquitos Youth Soccer Association and F.C. San Diego. These clubs have been an integral part of the community for over 30 years sharing a legacy of successful player development, stable operations and a commitment to the community.
By 2009, the popularity of youth soccer in San Diego County had increased significantly. The number of soccer clubs in North County had grown considerably, and resources were spread thin. The Directors of Coaching at San Diego Soccer Club and Penasquitos Premier, Brian Quinn (Former US National Team Member and World Champion San Diego Sockers Player and Coach), Seamus McFadden (Head Coach of the USD Division 1 Men’s soccer program and former All-American), Raffi Ruotolo (Former World Champion San Diego Sockers Player), and Peter Stogsdill (highly successful High School and Premier level coach) realized they had a common philosophy and were challenged by the same issues. They concluded that a merger of their two clubs would create improved development opportunities for the soccer players in the San Diego community and the clubs would gain efficiency by combining operations. In September 2010, San Diego Soccer Club was created from these two organizations, keeping the best of both clubs and benefiting from nearly three decades of youth soccer in the North County area.
Since 1977, the Penasquitos Youth Soccer Association (PQYSA) has served the needs of youth soccer players from 5 to 18 years old in the Rancho Penasquitos community. PQYSA began as a recreational league then introduced the PQ Premier Competitive soccer league. In 2010 there were over 1800 young players participating in PQYSA’s recreational and PQ Premier programs. PQ Premier has grown into one of the most successful programs in North County especially for the girls with one of the highest ratio of premier teams in Southern California.
Pegasus Soccer/San Diego Soccer Club History
Youth Soccer in Rancho Bernardo started in 1978 with an All-Star boys’ team called the Bernardo Hornets. In 1981 the yellow and black striped Hornets added another boys’ team along with a few younger girls’ teams. The club continued to grow, and nine years later, a competitive older girls’ program was developed. At that point, it was decided that the club would change its name to the San Diego Soccer Club to more accurately reflect the demographics of the players. This club was also known as Pegasus Soccer.
RBYSA was formed in 1990. Starting as a recreational league, RB Recreational Soccer has served the community for almost 30 years offering fall and spring recreational leagues for kids U 6 to U 14. The program has grown to serve over 1200 kids each season. Not long after the recreational program started the competitive program was created. The RBYSA competitive program named its teams the Renegades after beginning as a part of the Nomads organization. The RBYSA Renegades grew very quickly to about 24 competitive teams for both girls and boys. The teams were very successful winning several State Cup Championships. RBYSA and Pegasus Soccer merged to for F.C. San Diego Soccer in 2006.
San Diego Soccer Club has recreational soccer programs that have been an integral part of the Rancho Penasquitos and Rancho Bernardo Communities for 30 years. Boys and Girls from ages 3 through 18 are introduced to the game of soccer through practices and games played during the Fall and Spring seasons. The coaches are parent volunteers who are trained by the San Diego Soccer Club professional coaching staff. The teams are taught age appropriate skills at practice, and have weekly games throughout the season to put their new skills to test. In addition, RB Rec and PQ Rec Soccer offers skills clinics, shooting clinics, summer and spring break camps, all-star games, and a tournament at the end of each season. Premier Level Competitive Soccer Boys and Girls U 8 - U 19
The San Diego Soccer Club competitive soccer program offers teams in every age group from U8 through U19 for those who are interested in a higher level of play. These teams are coached by a highly qualified international coaching staff that train and develop youth soccer players with the objective of having them ultimately qualify for College, Olympic, National Team, and Professional Soccer, such as the many players listed on our Alumni page. Competitive coaching focuses on skill development in the early years and tactical abilities in the later years. And while winning is always our coaches’ game objective, skill development of our players is our primary focus.
San Diego Soccer Club’s program offers soccer to kids of all levels and ages from recreational to premier level competitive teams. Our goal is to develop each player and to ensure each player improves from year to year. Each age group has several teams allowing a player to grow and progress to higher levels within the same club. Equal development opportunities are provided to every player on every team regardless of entitlement level.
The San Diego Soccer Club program has grown to be the premier club of North San Diego fielding many Premier level teams in both the Girls and Boys programs. SDSC has fielded many very successful teams winning many State Cup Championships and repeat National Cup Finalists. Many San Diego Soccer Club players have been scouted and invited to the Cal South Olympic Development Program, invited to the adidas ESP Elite soccer camps, and play in highly regarded showcase tournament. Many players in our program have successfully entered college soccer programs and earned athletic scholarships.
